This past Wednesday, Thompson served on the judging panel for the UK Armed Forces strongest man and woman competition held in Colchester. She expressed profound inspiration seeing younger women compete, contrasting it with her own youth where she admitted to never being particularly skilled in sports, primarily participating in field events like javelin and shot put without sustained interest.<\/p>\n
Her fitness transformation began over a decade ago in preparation for her sister’s wedding. Thompson credits her eventual success to her inherent stubbornness. Despite being a mother to two teenage girls and leading a very busy life outside the gym, she continues to compete against women half her age.<\/p>\n
The competition in Colchester’s Merville Barracks saw approximately 50 personnel from the Royal Air Force, Royal Navy, and the Army vying for titles. This year marked the second iteration of the contest and its inaugural hosting in Essex.<\/p>\n
Air specialist Connor Poole of RAF Honington in Suffolk was crowned the strongest man, while Maj Lucia Phillips, from the regional occupational health team based at Catterick in North Yorkshire, triumphed as the strongest woman. Phillips emphasized the importance of strength training for women, stating it is crucial for maintaining functional movement, mobility, and fitness throughout their lives.<\/p>\n
Col Stu Allen, chairman of the competition, highlighted how the event cultivates the essential physicality and mentality required by troops on the battlefield. He proudly noted a threefold increase in participation over the last year for this relatively new sport.<\/p>\n
