The Iranian Football Federation (FFIRI) stated that Iran would compete in the tournament “without any retreat from our beliefs, culture and convictions,” while emphasizing that the hosts “must take our concerns into account.”<\/p>\n
These demands follow an incident where FFIRI president Mehdi Taj was denied entry to Canada prior to last month’s FIFA Congress. Taj later disclosed that Iran had presented FIFA with 10 conditions for participation<\/b> at the World Cup, which is scheduled to begin on June 11 in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.<\/p>\n
Among the conditions published in a statement on Saturday are guarantees that all players, coaches, and officials traveling with the team will receive visas. This includes individuals who have completed military service with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). The IRGC is designated as a terrorist organization by Canada and the US, and Mehdi Taj’s reported links to it were cited as a reason for his denial of entry into Canada.<\/p>\n
Iran is also seeking assurances regarding the treatment of the national team, including respect for the Iranian flag and national anthem, as well as enhanced security measures at airports, hotels, and stadiums throughout the tournament.<\/p>\n
Some of these requests may be more straightforward for FIFA to influence than others. FIFA can assist in overseeing tournament logistics, official protocols, and the treatment of participating delegations during the competition. However, matters concerning visas, border controls, and security vetting ultimately fall under US jurisdiction rather than FIFA regulations.<\/p>\n
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has affirmed that Iranian footballers would be welcome at the tournament, while noting that individuals with links to the IRGC could still encounter restrictions on entering the United States. This situation presents FIFA with a delicate balancing act: ensuring the participation of all qualified teams while navigating the geopolitical realities of relations between Tehran and Washington.<\/p>\n
The broader regional context includes recent events such as wide-ranging strikes launched by Israel and the US on Iran on February 28, followed by Iran’s responses against Israel and US-allied states in the Gulf. A fragile ceasefire has since largely suspended the fighting.<\/p>\n
Other requests from the Iranian federation may also prove challenging to implement. Reports indicate Iranian officials have requested journalists to focus on “technical football matters.” However, in certain contexts, the interplay between sports and broader societal or political discussions can be observed.<\/p>\n
This dynamic was evident during the women’s Asian Cup in Australia in March, where an incident involving several Iranian players seeking asylum occurred, leading to a diplomatic situation. While seven players received humanitarian visas, five ultimately chose to return to Iran.<\/p>\n
Iranian men’s coach Amir Ghalenoei recently acknowledged that politically charged atmospheres could surround some matches involving Iran at the World Cup. Despite these tensions, there is currently no indication that Iran intends to withdraw from the tournament.
