This appeal comes as the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and its associated fuel crisis dominate discussions at the two-day BRICS gathering in New Delhi, India.

Iran’s Accusations and Calls for Resistance

On Thursday, Araghchi accused the United Arab Emirates, a US ally, of direct involvement in military operations against Iran. This rare public accusation occurred during a meeting where Iranian and Emirati officials were present together for the first time since the US and Israel’s war on Iran commenced in late February.

Araghchi asserted that Iran is a “victim of illegal expansionism and warmongering.” He urged the BRICS+ nations – a group comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, and the UAE – to resist “Western hegemony and the sense of impunity that the US believes it is entitled to.”

He explicitly stated, “Iran therefore calls upon BRICS member states and all responsible members of the international community to explicitly condemn violations of international law by the United States and Israel.” Later, the Iranian semi-official Mehr news agency reported Araghchi reiterating to the gathering that the UAE was “directly involved in the aggression against my country.”

In response to the US and Israeli attacks on Iran, Tehran has launched strikes on US military sites and assets located in Gulf States, including the UAE. It remains unclear how or if the UAE and other nations attending the BRICS+ meeting have responded to Araghchi’s strong remarks.

Divisions Within BRICS Amid Regional Tensions

India is currently hosting the foreign ministers from the expanded BRICS bloc, which now includes Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE – countries that hold differing views on the war in the Middle East. India’s Foreign Minister, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, noted in his opening speech that “We meet at a time of considerable flux in international relations,” before closed-door meetings began.

Disruptions to Gulf shipping routes and the Strait of Hormuz continue to fuel volatility in oil and gas markets, placing increased pressure on energy-importing economies, including India. India’s Ministry of External Affairs also condemned an attack on an Indian-flagged ship off Oman on Wednesday as “unacceptable,” with all sailors safely rescued by Muscat. The ministry deplored the targeting of commercial shipping and civilian mariners but did not specify the perpetrators. Araghchi, however, insisted that the Strait of Hormuz “is open for all” commercial vessels that “cooperate” with its navy.

Economic Impact and Challenges to Consensus

The US and Israel’s war on Iran has strained India’s economy, which heavily relies on Middle Eastern energy supplies and fertilizer imports, casting uncertainty over India’s growth outlook. India, the world’s third-largest oil buyer, typically sources about half of its crude through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway through which approximately 20 percent of the world’s oil passes during peacetime.

India is set to host a BRICS leaders’ summit later this year, and the foreign ministers will also meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Given the deep divisions among some members over the Middle East conflict, it is uncertain whether BRICS, which operates on consensus, will issue a joint statement at the meeting’s conclusion.

Iran’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs for Legal and International Affairs, Kazem Gharibabadi, informed the Press Trust of India news agency that “one member country” had pushed for language condemning Iran, complicating efforts to build consensus within the grouping. Gharibabadi emphasized, “We want India’s BRICS chairship to be successful. It is not a good approach to send a signal to the world that the BRICS is divided.”

#BRICS #Iran #MiddleEastConflict #InternationalLaw #USIsrael #Geopolitics #EnergySecurity #StraitOfHormuz #NewDelhi #Diplomacy

Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, has called upon fellow BRICS nations to condemn what he described as violations of international law by the United States and Israel.
