Bruno Rodr\u00edguez, Cuba’s foreign minister, emphasized that Havana “neither threatens nor desires war.” His statement came after the US news site Axios reported, citing classified intelligence, that Cuba now possesses 300 drones and was discussing potential strikes on nearby US targets. The Axios report, published on Sunday, further suggested Cuba might be considering using these drones to target the US military base at Guantanamo Bay<\/b>, naval vessels, and possibly Key West in Florida<\/b>.<\/p>\n
An unnamed US official quoted in the report indicated that the intelligence, characterized as a potential pretext for US military intervention, also suggested the presence of Iranian military advisers in Havana<\/b>. Rodr\u00edguez took to social media, stating, “Without any legitimate excuse whatsoever, the US government builds, day after day, a fraudulent case to justify the ruthless economic war against the Cuban people and the eventual military aggression.” He added that “specific media outlets play along, promoting slander and leaking insinuations from the US government itself.” While asserting that Cuba does not wish for war, he confirmed the nation is preparing for “external aggression” and self-defense.<\/p>\n
Cuba is currently grappling with a severe fuel crisis<\/b>, exacerbated by an effective US oil blockade. This situation has led to rolling blackouts affecting essential services like hospitals and pumping stations, disrupting public transport and rubbish collections. Coupled with shortages of food and medicine, these conditions have triggered rare public dissent against the communist government, which presides over deteriorating infrastructure.<\/p>\nEscalating US Pressure and Sanctions<\/h3>\n
On Monday, the US Treasury imposed new sanctions on Cuba’s intelligence agency and nine Cuban nationals, including its ministers of communications, energy, and justice, as well as communist party officials and senior military personnel.<\/p>\n
The Trump administration has been increasing its pressure campaign on Cuba. US President Donald Trump has previously threatened Cuba’s communist regime with intervention similar to the intensified pressure campaign against Venezuelan President Nicol\u00e1s Maduro. Furthermore, reports have emerged that the US is planning to indict Ra\u00fal Castro, who led Cuba after his brother Fidel. This move draws parallels to the federal indictment against Venezuela’s Maduro, which the Trump administration used as justification for its aggressive stance against his government.
