According to U.S. media outlets, the proposed agreement reportedly includes a 60-day extension of a ceasefire, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, and subsequent negotiations concerning Iran’s nuclear program.

In a social media post, President Trump described the ongoing talks as ‘constructive’ but emphasized that ‘both sides must take their time and get it right’. He had previously indicated on Saturday that an agreement was ‘largely negotiated’, leading to speculation about an imminent announcement. Iranian media reports suggest that ‘one or two’ points of disagreement remain in the potential deal. Iranian officials also signaled progress in the weekend talks, though Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei clarified that this did not guarantee agreements on all key issues.

The proposed deal has generated varied reactions among U.S. Republicans. Some have publicly expressed concerns that it might be too lenient towards Iran. Senator Ted Cruz reportedly called it ‘a disastrous mistake’, while Roger Wicker, Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, suggested a 60-day ceasefire could undermine previous efforts. Conversely, Representative Mike Lawler of the House Foreign Affairs Committee stated that the administration has succeeded in bringing the ‘remnants of this regime into a negotiation, a real negotiation’.

The current context follows wide-ranging strikes launched by the U.S. and Israel on Iran on February 28, which escalated conflict across the Middle East. Iran responded with attacks on Israel and U.S.-allied states in the Gulf. A ceasefire agreed upon in April, intended to facilitate talks, has largely been observed, despite occasional exchanges of fire.

The Strategic Importance of the Strait of Hormuz

The Strait of Hormuz, a narrow waterway situated between Iran, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Oman, is a critical global shipping route. At its narrowest point, approximately 21 miles (33 km) wide, it connects the Gulf to the Gulf of Oman. This vital passage typically handles about 20% of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas supply, originating from Iran and other Gulf states like Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE. Estimates from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) indicate that in 2025, approximately 20 million barrels of oil passed through this waterway daily, representing nearly $600 billion (£447 billion) in annual energy trade. Sea traffic in the Strait has seen a significant reduction since the onset of the conflict.

In a recent post on Truth Social, President Trump reiterated that negotiations are ‘proceeding in an orderly and constructive manner’ and that he has instructed his representatives ‘not to rush into a deal’ as ‘time is on our side’. He emphasized, ‘Both sides must take their time and get it right. There can be no mistakes!’ Trump also stressed that Iran ‘must understand’ it cannot develop a nuclear weapon, a position consistently held by the U.S., Israel, and other Western allies. Tehran, however, maintains that its nuclear program is exclusively for peaceful purposes. U.S. media reports suggest the potential deal could involve Iran handing over its highly-enriched uranium. Iran is estimated to possess around 440kg (970 lbs) of highly-enriched uranium, a material capable of producing nuclear energy and, if sufficiently enriched, weapons.

President Trump also affirmed that Washington’s blockade of Iranian ports, in effect since early April, will remain ‘in full force and effect until an agreement is reached, certified, and signed’. This blockade has been implemented by the U.S. to pressure Tehran into accepting its terms. Meanwhile, Iran has maintained control over the Strait of Hormuz, impacting the vital waterway and contributing to global oil price increases. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio previously noted ‘significant’ but ‘not final’ progress in the negotiations, hinting at positive developments regarding Hormuz that could lead to a ‘completely open strait… without tolls’.

On Saturday, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Baghaei informed state television that Iran was finalizing a ‘memorandum of understanding’ to facilitate further talks aimed at reaching a final agreement. President Trump also referenced a ‘memorandum of understanding’ in a Saturday post on Truth Social. Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, a mediator in the talks, expressed optimism that a positive outcome is ‘within reach’. However, some U.S. media outlets, citing officials, reported that no agreement was expected to be signed between the two countries on Sunday.

#IranDeal #USIranRelations #StraitOfHormuz #NuclearNegotiations #MiddleEastPeace #GlobalEnergy #Diplomacy #Trump #InternationalRelations #Ceasefire

U.S. President Donald Trump has stated that he instructed American negotiators not to rush into a deal with Iran, following reports indicating that an agreement was nearing completion.
