After nearly sixty years of dedicated service to tradespeople and DIY enthusiasts, a beloved tool shop in Maidenhead, Berkshire, is closing its doors. Owners David and Maureen Hunt, who have been at the helm since 1967, are reflecting on their journey with a mix of sadness and cherished memories.
A Legacy of Community and Craftsmanship
The shop, located on Knowl Hill, has been a fixture in the community, evolving from David’s early days selling tools from a caravan at his father’s garden centre. Over six decades, it not only supplied tools but also retailed industrial machinery, becoming a hub for both professionals and hobbyists alike.
David Hunt, now 80, stated that it was the “right time to retire.” He fondly recalled the shop’s unique atmosphere, describing it as having a “community atmosphere similar to a pub.” He expressed, “I have fond memories of running this place and I shall miss the people immensely who were all characters. We’ve had our ups and downs. It’s been a long time and a steady job but things change over the years.”
Navigating Change and Embracing Retirement
The couple acknowledged the challenges posed by the growth of online retail in recent years, which impacted their trade. Despite this, David emphasized his readiness for a new chapter: “I’ve done 15 more years than the average person and its time to relax and enjoy life now. I feel the time is right to retire, with the economy and old age against me.”
He particularly cherished the social aspect of the shop, thanking his “local and loyal customers.” “It’s quite a social little place, you get a load of characters turning up,” he said, noting that “we get people who come in every day just to chat.”
Maureen Hunt described the closure as “bittersweet.” She shared heartwarming memories: “We have had fun running the tool shop together, raising our children and watching them run and play down the aisles. It is sad to say goodbye, but we will take away the fondest of memories.”
