Conservative US Town Confronts Proposed ICE Detention Center

In February, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) acquired an empty warehouse for over $128 million in Social Circle, Georgia, with the potential to convert it into a detention center. This proposed facility is designed to house 10,000 people, which would effectively triple the current population of Social Circle.

Despite some residents supporting President Donald Trump’s mass deportation policies, the community has largely rejected this plan due to various concerns.

Incoming DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin has since paused any new warehouse acquisitions intended for housing immigrants. However, the future of facilities already purchased, such as the one in Social Circle, remains uncertain.

The BBC’s Madeline Halpert spoke with local residents to understand their perspectives and concerns regarding this significant development.
