Trump Lashes Out at Conservative Commentators
Donald Trump recently launched a sharp attack on four conservative commentators – Tucker Carlson, Megyn Kelly, Alex Jones, and Candace Owens – labeling them as “stupid people” and asserting that “nobody cares about them.” His criticism stemmed from their public disapproval of the US-Israeli approach concerning Iran.
Despite his dismissal, Trump dedicated a significant portion of a Truth Social post to discussing these individuals. He singled out the former popular Fox News hosts, Carlson and Kelly, alongside right-wing figures Jones and Owens, using derisive language to highlight what he perceived as their past failings.
All four had previously been vocal supporters of Trump, playing a role in his efforts to engage right-wing podcasters and social media influencers during his 2024 presidential campaign. However, Trump now claims their views are contrary to his “Make America Great Again” movement.
“They’re not MAGA, they’re losers,” Trump stated. “As president, I could get them on my side anytime I want to, but when they call, I don’t return their calls because I’m too busy on world and country affairs.”
Diverging Views on Iran Policy
Tucker Carlson, who previously hosted Fox News’ highest-rated evening program, has cultivated a large audience on X (formerly Twitter) advocating a populist form of conservatism that has at times diverged from Trump’s. Carlson has been a vocal opponent of the US policy towards Iran from its early stages. He recently intensified his criticism, describing Trump’s Easter Sunday message related to Iran as “vile on every level” and characterizing threats to target civilian infrastructure as a potential war crime.
Following Trump’s latest post, Carlson expressed continued affection for the former president but admitted to feeling “sorry for him.” He also echoed a sentiment among some conservatives that Trump’s decisions regarding Iran might be influenced by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, stating, “The Israelis have him in a hammerlock.”
Candace Owens, who recently made unsubstantiated claims about the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk due to his anti-Israel views, offered a more direct assessment of Trump, writing, “It may be time to put Grandpa up in a home.”
Former Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, briefly mentioned by Trump in his post, also responded on X. She wrote, “President Trump has gone mad as he wages war against Iran, a broken campaign promise.” Greene added, “I fought alongside Tucker Carlson, Megyn Kelly, Candace Owens and Alex Jones to help get Trump elected. We never changed. Trump did.”
Greene, who had a public disagreement with Trump last year over his handling of government files related to Jeffrey Epstein, has increased her criticism of the former president since resigning from Congress in January. Her opposition to the Iran policy, along with that of Carlson, Kelly, and others, highlights the growing fissures within Trump’s conservative base since the discussions around the conflict began.
Diplomatic Efforts and Potential Escalation
These internal divisions emerge as Vice-President JD Vance leads a US delegation to Pakistan for face-to-face negotiations with Iranian representatives. A fragile two-week ceasefire with Iran is currently in effect. However, Trump recently informed the New York Post that the US military is rearming and resupplying in preparation for renewed hostilities should the talks fail. The potential for escalation and growing opposition from within Trump’s own political sphere adds significant stakes to the ongoing situation.
