Trump Appoints New CDC Director Amid Leadership Vacuum

President Donald Trump has announced the appointment of Erica Schwartz to lead the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The announcement was made by Trump on social media.

Schwartz, a Coast Guard rear admiral, previously served as Trump’s deputy surgeon general during his first administration, bringing significant experience to the role.

The CDC has been without a Senate-confirmed director for several months following the departure of its last leader, Susan Monarez. This period saw Jay Bhattacharya, director of the National Institutes of Health, overseeing the agency on an interim basis.

In his statement on Truth Social, Trump expressed his enthusiasm for the nomination, writing, “It is my honor to nominate the incredibly talented Dr. Erica Schwartz, MD, JD, MPH, as my Director of the CDC. She is a star!”

Monarez was reportedly ousted in September after disagreements with Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. over his vaccine policies. In an op-ed, Monarez stated that her dismissal stemmed from her refusal to endorse vaccine recommendations from a new advisory panel, which Kennedy had reportedly populated with individuals described as vaccine skeptics. This appointment comes at a critical time for the agency, highlighting the administration’s direction for public health policy.
